MAC Plans Annual Homecoming

There will be something for everyone at this year’s 11th annual Homecoming on Saturday, Feb. 23. This year’s homecoming basketball games see men’s and women’s teams battling the State Fair Roadrunners. Alumni, students and friends can follow Homecoming developments on the “Mineral Area College Alumni” Facebook page or online at
Saturday’s fun begins with a 2 p.m. theatre matinee.  The MAC Theatre Guild will perform the comedy “Completely Hollywood, (Abridged)” in the Fine Arts Theater.  The play will treat audiences to a continuous sequence of hilarity and laughter and stars Kelvin Urday of Keller, TX; Brian Kelley of Desloge, and Chuck Gallaher of Belleview.  In addition to the 2 p.m. matinee on Homecoming day, the play also runs Feb. 21 and 22 at 7 p.m.  Cost is $7 general admission or $3 for senior citizens and students who present a MAC I.D.  Tickets are available at MAC’s Bookstore (573) 518-2106 or at the door.
At 4 p.m., the Alumni Room opens in the private dining room of the Bob Sechrest Field House, and an Alumni Reunion will take place until 5 p.m.  The Alumni Room showcases over nine decades of yearbooks and memorabilia spanning back to the 1920s, and friends, graduates and former students and employees are invited to reunite and reminisce over coffee and snacks.
Director of Alumni Relations Julia Dill says the Alumni Reunion presents an ideal opportunity to meet new faces and reunite with long-time friends prior to the basketball games.
“Each year we meet new people who share great stories and memories about classmates, instructors and the history of MAC and its predecessor Flat River Junior College.  Many have stayed right here in the Mineral Area, and others travel from southeast Missouri, the St. Louis area and beyond,” says Dill.
The men and women Cardinals basketball teams will face off against the State Fair Roadrunners at 5 p.m. and 7 p.m. respectively.  Admission is $5 for adults and $2 for youth and covers both games.  As of this writing, the women hold a NJCAA National Ranking of 13 and are 17 and 3 on the season.  The men are ranked 23 and are 18 and 3 on the season.
Half-time performances will feature the Ste. Genevieve gymnastics group Flipside during the women’s game and the MAC Cheerleaders will take the floor during the men’s.
Families are encouraged to bring the kids for fun with award-winning MAC mascot Kirby the Cardinal. During the women’s half-time, there will be prizes for all as kids join Kirby and Athletic Director Chad Mills on the gym floor to shoot some hoops like a MAC Cardinal. Parents are encouraged to bring their cameras for photos and autographs with Kirby at 6:30 p.m. in the Alumni Room.  In the weeks leading up to the game, students in grades K-2 can show their spirit by downloading a MAC pennant from the college’s website,, to color and send in.  “Kids for Kirby” pennants will be on display in the Field House throughout Homecoming.
MAC students are invited to compete for the Most Spirited Student Award by packing the stands in full, fun MAC gear to cheer their teams to victory.  Winners will be chosen and announced immediately prior to the men’s game.  Awards will be given for an individual and a team, complete with cash prizes.
For those wishing to show their Cardinal pride, official MAC Homecoming 2013 T-shirts are available at the MAC Bookstore while they last.  The T-shirt incorporates Kirby the Cardinal and this year's theme "Outrun the Roadrunners.”  Fans can purchase T-shirts, hoodies, hats, and other gear from the MAC Bookstore, which opens at 4 p.m.

Free shuttle service between the field house and campus parking lots will be provided compliments of MAC’s Christian Student Union.  For a quick trip, visitors can call Joe Banderman at (573) 631-0694.
Homecoming celebrations actually kick-off the week prior to Homecoming.  In the Bob Sechrest Field House during the 10 o’clock hour, students are invited to enjoy Chili with the Cheerleaders on Wednesday, and a fun-filled Pep Rally takes place on Friday packed with games, giveaways, and a salute to MAC athletic teams.  Introductions will include MAC cheerleaders and award-winning mascot Kirby the Cardinal, and basketball, volleyball, golf, softball and baseball teams.
