Paula Thompson, Mineral Area College LPN instructor and Mineral Area Regional Medical Center emergency room nurse, recently received the Florence Nightingale award at an Oct. 12 awards banquet hosted by the Heartland chapter of the Emergency Nurses Association at Rosener’s Banquet Hall during Emergency Nurses Week.

(PARK HILLS) -- Paula Thompson, Mineral Area College LPN instructor and Mineral Area Regional Medical Center emergency room nurse, recently received the Florence Nightingale award at an Oct. 12 awards banquet hosted by the Heartland chapter of the Emergency Nurses Association at Rosener’s Banquet Hall during Emergency Nurses Week.

Thompson was presented the Florence Nightingale Award by Shelley Layton, RN, MHA. The award is annually awarded on behalf of the Emergency Nurses Association Leadership, and recognizes a leader in the emergency field that they feel truly devotes his or her life to advancing and honoring, and most importantly leading, the profession.

In her remarks, Layton provided a history of Florence Nightingale’s care and compassion, and her contributions to the development of modern nursing during the 19th century. Layton observed Nightingale had dedicated her life to the advancement of nursing through professionalism, advocacy, confidentiality, devotion, and leadership.

“Like Nightingale, Paula Thompson has demonstrated these qualities,” Layton said.  “Paula is hard-working, compassionate, dedicated, loyal, and she is a true patient advocate and team leader. Those around her say they are inspired just by working with her …She has honored her profession and pledge with her actions, knowledge, and caring attitude.  Nightingale would be proud to stand by her side and truly ‘nurse’ patients even today.”

The Heartland chapter, No. 459, was established June 2011 by devoted emergency nurses and leaders spanning several counties in the southeast Missouri region, including Crawford, Iron, Madison, Perry, St. Francois, Ste. Genevieve, and Washington. Heartland ENA currently has 21 members.
